Recommendation for Distinguished Conduct Medal
Henslow Alfred GRAY , Sergeant, 29th Battalion.
During the whole period this NCO has acted as Transport Sergeant and several times, during the absence of the Transport Officer, has been in charge of the Transport. It has been his duty nightly to go with the limbers containing the hot food, rations and material to the Battalion in the line, and he has, without exception, succeeded in reaching his destination under very trying and difficult circumstances. He has at all times displayed great initiative in picking roads and track forward for the limbers and during the advance his work was rendered extremely difficult in having to continually pick out new tracks over unknown country under heavy enemy shell fire.
By his absolute disregard for personal danger and skilful transport work he has always set a very high example to the Transport Drivers and rendered most valuable service to his Battalion. Sgt Gray has been with the Battalion since its inception.
Date of recommendation 20 Sep 1918
