Pte Higgins attached to Battalion H Qrs formerly with A Coy was with Hall when he was killed at Bullecourt on the 3rd of May and told me about it.  During the advance they were laying a wire together and Hall was killed, hit in the head by a shrapnell shell which exploded some yards away.  We were relieved next morning, and so far as I know his body had not been buried when we went out of the line.  Hall was in A Coy and came from Victoria.

He was on Hdqrs, an observer.  Called him Hughie.  I knew him very well.  He was dark and over medium height.  He spoke with a bit of a lisp.  This was our attack at Bullecourt on the morning of May 3rd.  During the advance I was sent back for ammunition.  I saw Hall lying at our side of the railway embankment from which we had started the attack.  He was sead.  he had a very bad shrapnel wound in the head.  he must have been killed absolutely outright.  he was buried by the 24th Battn Pioneers on the same day, just behind the railway embankment.  I was not at the burial.

I knew a man called Hughie Hall and I believe he was a L/Cpl, attached to A Coy.  I did not know his number nor did I know anything of him before joining up.  He was dark,k clean shaven, about 5 ft 9, about 23 and single.  I was told by Pte S Higgins who was a runner at Battn HQ that he and  Hall were running together when they heard a shell coming and they both dropped down.  When Higgings looked up again Hall was on his hands and knees and never moved again.  Higgins was sure that Hall was killed.  This occurred on the morning of the 3rd May during the advance on Bullecourt.  I don't know where Hall was buried. Pte Higgins who is still with the Battn HQ might give further information.

He was killed by shrapnel on May 3rd.  I was right beside him when he was hit through the heart and killed instantly.  He was buried by the AIF Regimental Chaplain at Bullecourt behind an embankment close to where he fell.  It was not in a cemetery.  About five others were buried near him in separate graves.  The service was held as well as possible under the circumstances, during a bit of a lull in the firing.  A rough cross was put up with his name written with indelible pencil.  We still hold the ground.  He was about 5 ft 9½ inches clean shaven, good features, very nice disposition and very popular.  A good sport, particularly at football, age say about 21 or 22.
