Lieutenant Quintin Robert Smith,
reported to have died of wounds in the Dardanelles, was 23 years of age, and the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Smith, of Bulla road, Essendon, and late of 19 Shaftesbury street, Essendon. He was a Hawthorn collegian, and began his military career as a Cadet there. Afterwards he was lieutenant of senior cadets in the Camberwell district. He was a prominent member of the Boroondarra Rifle Club, and a winner of the V.R.A. medal and other trophies. Later he held a position in Outtrim (V.), and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the progress association and debating society, and also president of the A.N.A in that town. He went from there to Broadmeadows as a private, and obtained his lieutenancy shortly afterwards.
He was connected with the local military forces for several years, and at the time of his enlistment for service abroad he was an active member of the Bendigo Lawn Tennis Club.

D of Wounds 8.5.15 Details
- 2/Lt Q Smith joined this battalion with the 2nd reinforcements on 1.5.15. He was wounded on 4.5.15 on Courtney's Post by a "Shrapnel Burst" and was sent off to a hospital ship. Nothing was heard of him from that time until we received a report that he had died of wounds in our Part II Orders, but no date was stated.

- Witness knew Lieut Smith in the 14th Btn. He was badly wounded in the legs at Courtney's Post early in May. He received the wound while in his dug out. Witness was there and saw him carried down the Gully on a stretcher. Ref: Pte R Andrews 943, Pioneers, 14 AIF. Tel el Kebir Camp.

- Lieut Smith was wounded at Courtney's Post on or about 1/5/15. Both his legs were badly damaged, while he was in his dug out. Witness bandaged him up and took him to the dressing station. Ref: Pte A M Code, 1198. Stretcher-bearers, 14 AIF, Tel el Kebir Camp.

- Lt Smith was wounded early in May at Shrapnel Gully. He was wounded in the legs. Witness was there and saw him at the time. Witness thought he looked bad then. Ref: Pte D Rawett 1803 or 1603, C Co, 14 AIF, Tel el Kebir Camp

- Witness states that he was in a dug out with Lieut Smith on 2/5/15 when he was struck by a shell and badly wounded in the legs. This was at Courtney's Post. Witness knows that he was taken away but has not seen him since. Ref Sgt/Maj Jacka, C CO, 14 AIF, Tel el Kebir Camp

LIEUT. Q. R. SMITH.
Lieutenant Quinton Robert Smith, who died of
wounds on Saturday, was 23 years of age.
He was appointed second lieutenant on December
10 last, and was attached to the 14th Battalion
(second reinforcements). He was the son of Mr.
Alexander R. Smith, of 19 Shaftesbury street,
Essendon.
