In the recent Public Schools' Sports he carried off the 440 Yds. Championship in 52 1-5th sec;—a rattling performance. Like Neate, he. has also met with varied success. In 1911 he won the Senior Maiden 100 yds and the Senior 100 yds and 220 Yds Championships. The next year he again distinguished himself by carrying off the 100 yds., 220 yds., and 440 yds. School Championships. Last July he Won the 100 Yds. Championship of the Caulfield Tally-Ho in 10 2-5 sec. Taking part in the school sports a few weeks ago, he won the quarter-mile in easy style in 52 2-5th sec., was second in the mile, and was runner-up to Neate in both the 100 yds. and 220 yds. events. He represented the college in the Public Schools' sports last year, but failed to materialise, his non-success being partly attributed to a recent illness. This year he rowed "two" in the college crew, and has been a member of the football team since 1911, being elected vice-captain this year. At the invitation of the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association, Hardiman will compete in the 100 yds. invitation race at the Amateur Sports Ground on Saturday, November 15th.

By the last island mail I received a letter from Pte. R. V. Hardiman, the old Xavier College boy and well-known Victorian' sprinter, who is located 'somewhere in the Pacific;' and, from his report, at a very pretty spot, too, although Hardiman states that if there are two consecutive fine days it is looked, upon as a drought. He reports being fit and well.

MR. R. V. HARDIMAN
Old Xaverians deeply regret the death, from
pneumonic influenza, of Robert V. Hardiman,
which took place at his mother's residence,
Kensington, on May 8th, after a very short
illness. He was the youngest son of Mrs.
Hardiman and the late Cr. M. J. Hardiman,
and was educated at Xavier College, where
he was very popular with the masters and
students. He was a keen athlete, and took
a leading part in all branches of sport,
figuring prominently in the college football,
running, and rowing. In 1913 he won the
440 yds. Championship at the Pubic Schools'
sports. He was also a prefect. For several
years after leaving college he devoted
much time to coaching the Xavier running
team. Always a staunch follower of Xavier, no
public schools' contest was complete without
his enthusiastic support. In 1917 he was
appointed assistant secretary to the Public
Schools' Battalion, and later in the year left
for active service at Rabaul. At the end of last
year he was returned from Rabaul with malaria.
RIP.
