2044 Private George Legdon Harris, 57th Battalion
On or about 5th March 1918, I was on an outpost duty at No 13 post on Messines Ridge, with No 2044 Pte Harris G L of my Battalion. A minnenwerfer (large) blew the post right in except three yards of it, where another man and I were. Harris had just previously said "I'll get a drink of tea". The tea had been brought up into the post, and was just behind him. Immediately after the explosion a search was made, and one wounded man was rescued, and one man was found killed. We were taken out within half an hour. No trace of Harris had been found up to that time. Parties were looking for remains for two nights after, withouth result. |
Mrs Harris wrote to the Army in 1922 from The Esplanade, Dromana, seeking information about how to find the Menin Gate memorial as she intended to visit London shortly, and intended to visit the memorial.
