Volunteers of Essendon and Flemington, 1914-1918

Sarah Ann Hickson with a portrait of her son Albert Edmund Hickson. This was sent as a postcard

from Sarah to her daughter Alice Marion Luscombe. It is a poignant reminder of the family

members the AIF left behind to worry over them, and the many hearts that would be broken.

The Captain in the centre of the photo is most likely Capt Charles Mills, who embarked with D Company on the Wandilla.  Mills was wounded and captured at Fleurbaix and spent the rest of the war in a Prisoner of War Camp.  The 2nd Lieutenant, probably William Sharp, to Mills' right, was received a bullet wound in the hip at Fleurbaix. When he returned to duty in France he suffered a further wounding with gas.  Sharp returned to Australia as a Major.  Photo courtesy of Yvonne Macvean.

Recommendation for Military Medal

31st Btn AIF, No 872  Private Albert Edward Hickson

On the 9/8/18 near VAUVILLERS this man did wonderful work as a stretcher bearer.  His Company was being exposed during the day to heavy shell and MG fire and it became necessary to take risks in order to recover the wounded.

He showed an absolute disregard for his own personal safety and refused to stop working until the last  of the wounded had been removed to the rear, thus setting a splendid example to his comrades.
