RELIEF FOR FIRST ANZACS WANTED.
The need for reinforcements to relieve the original Anzacs is emphasised in a letter by Lance-Corporal A. P. Hosking, who is attached to the army medical section of the 5th Battalion. Writing to his parents, he says: — "There are still quite a lot of 'originals' in our battalion. They are about played out, too, poor beggars. It's strange that some of the chaps at home don't came to light. If only they knew what these poor beggars have gone through and are going through they would back them up a bit, I'm sure. It's precious little encouragement the troops get when we read of strikes and petty political strife, while all the time the gentlemen of the Commonwealth are being gradually killed off to save the Empire. Just let them see our boys in a scrap, and if they could not find some patriotism or self respect I know nothing. The A.l.F. is the finest bunch of manhood ever seen, and if 10,000 or 20,000 would hop in to relieve the 'originals' for a few months and fill up gaps elsewhere, too, then they would be worth their salt".
