5690 Lance Corporal Charles Franklin Hulett

 

1          Killed 9/8/18

 

I was there when he was hit and confirm Robinson’s account.  He got a bullet in his Dixie, then one in his tin hat, and say “By Jingo, I’ll get a one for keeps soon”.  Almost directly afterwards he got one in the heart. 

Informant Sgt P T Thomsett 7078  A Coy, 7th Battn

 

   He was a L/Cpl in A Coy, 4th platoon, 7th Battalion, tall, dark, heavy build.  I saw him hit in the heart by a Machine Gun bullet on 9th August about 2 pm during the advance on Lihons Ridge.  He was killed straight out.  I went on and saw no more of him.  He was a popular man in the company.

Informant:  Pte C O Robinson, 7088  A Coy, 4th Pltn, 7th Battn.

 

3    I buried him at Roziers in the Battalion Cemetery with the other men killed there

Informant:  Pioneer Sgt E C Bulmer 5582?? 7th Battn

 

4   Hulett was a L/Cpl and belonged to A Co and was killed on August 9 and buried with 51 others of the Bn by Pioneer Sgt Bulmer of the 7th Bn between Rosieres en Santerres and Vauvillers.  The Map Reference is Harbonnieres S? et X 15.C,2.2.  I myself was acting that day as Orderly Room Clerk at Bn HG and got the burial particulars from Sgt Bulmer and saw to the making of the cross with all the names on it.

5    Buried Copse Corner British Cemetery three quarter miles SSW of Vauvillers 1- miles ESE of Corbie.

 

6   He was killed instantly by machine gun fire at Rosiers and buried in a Military Cemetery at the same place.  The grave was marked by a Cross.”

In reply to your enquiry dated 20.12.19, regarding 5690 Cpl C F Hulett, 7th Battalion AIF who was killed in action on 9.8.18, we beg to inform you that he is buried in Copse Corner British Cemetery, ¾ miles SSW of Vauvillers 10 miles ESE of Corbie.

 

We are pursuing our enquiries and will advise you as soon as any further particulars come to hand.  Assuring you of our sincere sympathy in the loss of your friend
