Recommendation for Medaille Militare
2nd Field Company A E 177 2/Cpl JAMES, Ernest Charles
On night 22nd/23rd August, 1918 at PROYART (Sheet HARBONNIERES R 27) in laying out jumping off tapes for the operation of 23rd August, 1918, the party came under heavy enemy shell and machine gun fire. 2/Cpl JAMES showed no hesitation but continued his work under trying circumstances and with great determination succeeded in finishing his task. It was subsequently proved that the jumping off position was well laid out, being parallel to our barrage line when it was put down. Later on in the morning this NCO carried out reconnaissance of value and safely brought his reports through woods heavily shelled by the enemy , and showed great determination in completing his valuable reconnaissance.
