Johnson of, "Winstay," 2 Milton street, Ascot Vale, loving brother of Ruby, Ida (Mrs. A. Wenzel, Ivanhoe), Dolly, Sylvia, Leon and the late Jack, beloved fiance of Miss Margaret Smith, Brunswick, after two years and three months' active service, aged 28 years. When the roll is called up yonder, he'll be there.

Re 8000 Sgt C A Johnson, 16th Bty, 6th Army Bde. He was killed in action at Zillebeke 28-20-17. The Bty position was in front of Zillebeke Lake. The body was brought down to the waggon lines at Dickebusch, and buried at the soldiers' Cemetery,, about 400 yards out of, and on the Poperinghe side of Dickebusch. Sgt Johnson was a very popular and able NCO and was held in high esteem by his Officers and all ranks in the Bty. The burial took place the next day, and was attended by about 40 of his closest friends. A short service was conducted at the graveside by a C/E clergyman. Sgt Johnson was one of my particular chums and I with Sadd. Sgt J Thomas, of Melbourne personally assisted and attended the burial. The grave would be registered. The nearest description of his personal appearance: - a smart, active, well built man, height about 5'9", dark, pale face, sharp features, prominent nose. In civil life Sgt Johnson was in the electrical line in the Melbourne GPO. His fiancee lived in Moreland Road, East Brunswick, Melbourne. I remember about it, as I lived at 45 Moreland Road, West Brunswick, and we often talked over old times.
