VILLERS-BRETONNEUX MEMORIAL

"I've enclosed [a photo] that may be of interest as Private McHutchison was from Ascot Vale.  His photo was included in my great grandmother's collection of photos and postcards and after a bit of research to identify who he was, I came up with the details below.  Appears he was a workmate of my grand uncle, Reg Hawke.

Private Ross McHutchison – Ross enlisted in Melbourne on 12 July 1915.  This photo was taken a month prior to his embarkation from Melbourne (on HMAT Warilda on 8 February 1916) for Alexandria (arrived 21 March 1916) and then to Marseilles (arrived 27 March 1916).  He joined the 21st Battalion in France on 4 August 1916 and was killed in action only 3 weeks later, on 26 August 1916.  Ross’ name is recorded on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. (Details from the National Archives WWI records and from the Australian War Memorial).  Based on C E W Bean’s Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918, Ross would have been killed in the battle for Mouquet Farm on the Somme.

On 26 August 1916 the 21st Battalion lost 13 officers and 444 men (chapter 23, The Last Attacks on the Farm, of Volume 3 – The Australian Imperial Force in France, 1916).

Ross was recorded on his enlistment form as a clerk, age 18 (born 1897 per Vic BDM), living at Ascot Vale.  He was presumably a workmate of Reg Hawke’s, from the insurance business".
