About 20 guests assembled at 6 Chester street, Moonee Ponds, at the invitation of Miss G. I. Wilson, on Saturday evening, 12th inst., to bid farewell to Mr. Fred Jones, who has enlisted. After an enjoyable evening was spent in songs, recitations, etc., an adjournment was made to the supper room. The chair was occupied by Mr. S. G. Wilson, and after the toast of "The King" had been duly honoured the chairman proposed, in a few well-chosen words, the health of  the guest of the evening. Mr. H. Kerr, in proposing the health of the guest's mother (Mrs. A. Ling), remarked on the patriotism of Mrs. Ling, who had only two sons in her family, in giving both to her King and country, one son being at present in Egypt, and the other going into camp. The party broke up at midnight by singing "God Save the King" and Auld Lang Syne. Mr. Jones has been, for the past five years, relieving station-master on the Victorian Railways.

The friends of Sapper Fred. J. Jones, son of Mrs Ling, of Chester street, Moonee Ponds, sailed on the front last Saturday. He was married the previous Saturday, and when his wife was seeing him off at the boat she was unfortunate enough to slip and fracture her, wrist. Sapper Jones' brother, Private W. T. Jones, is now with the Australian troops in France.

3rd Aust Sig Coy,  Jones F J No 1063
2nd Oct 1917.  Det D/B

He was rather big, roundfaced.  He was a Corporal.  He was called 'Fred'.  He was in charge of a party burying cable up at Ypres in front of Passchendaele about the 2nd October and was hit by two or three pieces of shell and died later on.  He is buried about 2 kilometres in front of Ypres in front of Passchendaele. I think the grave is by itself.  A painted white cross with his name was put over the grave.  I have seen the grave.  Sapper Hopper of the 4rd Div Sig Coy (now with the unit) was with Jones when he was killed.  I did not see him killed.

He was a full Cpl at the time he was killed.  His Christian name was Fred.  He was a big chap, about 6 ft and heavily built, and the only Jones I knew.  He was hit when cable laying up near the lines, near the Zonnebeke Road, on or about 2nd Oct.  He was badly wounded by a shell and died at Bavaria House D.S.  I did not see him wounded but I saw the cross fixed up over his grave which is just on the other side of Zonnebeke Road, opposite Bavaria House.
