Volunteers of Essendon and Flemington, 1914-1918

James Horace Lane, presumably photographed some time prior to being appointed Lance Corporal on 5/9/1917.  The chevron on his left sleeve indicates a year of service with good conduct, so presumably the photo dates to sometime between 8 January 1917 when he would have completed 12 months service, and his promotion to Lance Corporal in September 1917.  Courtesy of the Australian War Memorial.

Although James Lane's B2455 is not specific on this subject, he clearly spent at least a few weeks in Egypt training before embarking for France from England in September 1916.  "I am in front of the standing camel.  They are being loaded with mortar bricks by the natives.  Jim." LANE, L/Cpl J H, 4453

K Oct 9th 17

I knew him well, he was in my platoon.  I don't know his initials or number or anything about him before he joined.  He was short, slight, had reddish  hair, and about 22.  We were in supports at the front of Broodseinde Ridge on the right of Zonnebeke Lake, about the 9th Oct and were moving up to the ridge to the attack at the time Cpl Lane was killed by a shell.  I was not near him and was wounded in the same attack.  When I rejoined the Battn about the end of Nov. it was in the same position as when we started the attack  I formed one of the salvage party and about 500 yards north of Zonnebeke Lake came across several graves, and among them was that of L/Cpl Lane and I saw his name on the cross.
