Harold served at Gallipoli with the 21st Infantry Battalion.  Back in Egypt after the evacuation, in March 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion which would use his skills as a carpenter, and embarked for France.  In July 1918 he was transferred again, to the Australian Broad Gauge Railways.
