A friend of Scurry W C Pte 2668 , "Bunty" Lawrence scrounged for tins, string, packing case wood and water to assist Scurry to construct a prototype "drip action" rifle prior to the evacuation. Lawrence was said to have been a school friend, but he is on the Moonee Ponds West State School Honour Board, as opposed to Scurry who was included on the Ascot Vale board, They probably knew each other through cadets as they both served with the 58th Area cadets.
The delayed action device, called a drip rifle, invented by Lance Corporal
Scurry 7 Battalion, AIF, for firing a rifle by means of weights operated through
water escaping fromone tin into another. Australian War Memorial Collection.
