Recommendation for Military Cross

Captain Arthur Poole Lawrence 6th Australian Field Ambulance

This officer displayed bravery and devotion to duty on 3rd, 4th and 5th October, 1918, during the fighting in the Hindenburg Line North of ST QUENTIN, particularly during the assault on MONTBREHAIN, as bearer Captain 6th Aust Field Ambulance.  He maintained touch with Regimental Aid Posts in spite of heavy shell fire, his personal courage inspired many others, and his genius for selecting routes and loading posts resulted in a very rapid evacuation of wounded.  His work throughout this period was quite outstanding; time after time he went to heavily shelled localities to extricate the wounded - he was always where the danger was greatest, where the casualties were occurring, and by his coolness and courage and example, rendered the most gallant service in a very difficult situation.
