Lived in Victoria Street, Moonee Ponds. Educated at Essendon Grammar School, he was a traveller by
profession. He was killed in action while serving with the 23rd Battalion at Bullecourt on May 3, 1917.
He was 37.

Macartney came over from Australia with me and were were in the same Pl. out here. He was a married man, age about 35. He was bald. The Bn. went over at Bullecourt, from the sunken road, at dawn, on 3rd May. He had only gone about 300 or 400 yards when Macartney, who was close to me go hit in the head by a piece of shell. He fell close to me and I saw that he had been killed instantly and had evidently suffered no pain at all We took our objective but later had to retire. Some of the men who were left wounded in about the same place as Macartney's body lay were afterwards reported as P/W. Whether the Germans buried our dead at that place, we do not know. British troops have also, since May, occupied that ground, so that his body is sure to have been buried. The place was about 500 yards on the Noreuil side of Riencourt.

Macartney's sister Dora Lynette Macartney was born in 1882 at Ascot Vale. Dora and her sister Denise both trained as nurses at Royal Children's Hospital in Carlton. Dora is notable in that she enlisted in November 1916 with the Australian Army Nursing Service. and dedicated her post-war involvement with baby health centres in western Victoria.
