Recommended for Military Cross

For gallant conduct.  On the night of the attack on the  HINDENBURG LINE west of Queant on 11/4/17 this Officer led his platoon with great gallantry and captured the first objective where he was severely wounded.  He remained with his platoon notwithstanding and supervised the work of consolidation until weakness through loss of blood forced him to evacuate the trench.

Amongst the names of those that have just received the Military Cross are Captain G. S. Robinson, A.M.C., and Captain J. A. Mitchell. Both are members of the committee of the Old St. Thomas' Grammarians and were educated at Carlton College when Mr. Gresham Robinson, MA, was the principal.

Captain Mitchell is the eldest son of Mr. T. Mitchell, of Mitchell's Agricultural Works, Footscray. He enlisted two years ago, and went away as a lieutenant, and saw severe fighting in France, was wounded, and has now received his promotion and the military decoration.

Captain Robinson has also been serving for over two years in the various hospitals and clearing stations on the French front. He is now attached to a West Australian battalion, and has often been under fire whilst engaged in his medical work, during the recent heavy firing at Arras. He is a nephew of the headmaster of St. Thomas' Grammar School.

Award Recommendation 29 Sep 1917
Captain Arthur John Mitchell MC

During the operation near Zonnebeke on 26/9/17 Captn Mitchell commanded C Coy.  His great personal courage was most inspiring particularly during counter attacks.  The Sector of ground which this Coy held was extremely difficult being particularly boggy, this called for careful judgement in the selection of site and arrangement of his trenches.  This work was performed so well that in addition to his Coy being able to resist counter attacks the dispositions made by him undoubtedly saved may lives.

Although recommended, it the MC does not appear to have been awarded.
