When Sapper Adrian Lord, of Napier street, Essendon, was leaving for the front recently, his friends arranged a surprise for him. Knowing his partiality for black cats, they procured one and took it down to the boat. As they were not allowed on board a rope was passed down from the ship, and the cat was tied on and hauled on board, to the amusement of everybody. The feline became a great favourite with the soldiers, and a note written from "somewhere in the ocean" stated that it had a metal disc round its neck and was the "mascot" of the contingent.
