Several photos in the album mention that the people in the photographs are battalion cooks. The "Bert Glangell" is most likely William Henry Herbert GANGELL, who was a baker in 8th Battalion. His Regimental number was 557 to Bert Swindells 602. Bert's service record doesn't clarify whether he was employed as a cook, but given his civilian occupation of baker, he may well have been. Relatives of Herbert Swindells confirm that they believe Bert Swindles in the photograph is their relative. Photographs on this page are not in any chronological order, and include photos labelled Zeitoun, Mena and Broadmeadows. Given the sand underfoot we will take the photo to have been taken in Egypt.
Detail of "Bert Swindles" from the previous photo.
Private Herbert (Bert) Swindells (wounded) is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Swindells, now of Moonee Ponds. He was born at Horsham, and is 24 years of age. He was one of the first to enlist, and went with the first contingent. He was a very popular lad, being a member of the fire brigade, a footballer, cricketer, and a member of the Church of England choir for many years. He is a baker by trade, having learnt his trade with Mr. Perring, of Horsham
