Robertson's father had been an inspector with the Education Department, and later opened his own secondary school known as the Essendon High School, a private school for boys. This was located on the corner of Robinson and Crawford St, on a site now occupied by St Monica's Primary School.

St Andrew's Coll., Bendigo; Ormond; M.Sc.; final honours, with scholarship in Geology and Kernot Research Scholarship; football blue, and in Engineers' winning eight 1909; Sgt in Junior Cadets, and a good marksman in M.U.R; Asst Mineralogist, and afterwards chemist and analyst, in Geological Survey of W.A.
On outbreak of war carried out a military survey near Perth; afterwards trained in Blackboy Camp, and won commission; sailed 6.6.15 to Egypt with 11th Btn, then to Gallipoli.
On 7th August, while holding a captured Turkish trench, and repelling a counter attack, he was shot, and died immediately, aet. 28.

News has been received of the death in action of Lieutenant Alexander John Robertson, son of Mr. J. L. Robertson, M.A., of Moonee Ponds. Mr. Robertson was a graduate (M.Sc.) of the University of Melbourne, where he had been a member of Ormond College, and for some years past he had held a scientific appointment under the West Australian Government. His commanding officer says, "He died a gallant Australian soldier."

ROBERTSON. - A loving tribute to our noble
nephew and cousin, Lieutenant Alexander John
Robertson, 11th Battalion A.I.F., who fell at
Gallipoli, 6th August, 1915, bravely fighting for
home and Empire.
A soldier and a man.
