To the already long list of local boys who have joined the colours and distinguished themselves in the firing line must be added the name of Sergeant Thomas McCarron, of 60 Lorne street, Moonee Ponds, whose widowed mother, Mrs. Anna E. McCarron, has just received information from the military authorities that her son has been mentioned in despatches for conspicuous bravery by Sir Ian Hamilton. Sergeant McCarron, who is 28 years of age, joined the first bridging train at Melbourne as a private, and left in May last, since which date he has received two promotions. Mrs. McCarron has received several letters from her son, in one of which he described the landing at Suvla Bay, and in an other he gave a graphic picture of a terrific storm on the peninsula. He is one of two out of his unit of 600 who have been singled out for special mention in Sir Ian Hamilton's report, but the precise details of the gallantry which led to this mark of favour are not, at present, known to the military authorities. Sergeant McCarron was educated at the Christian Brothers' School, Melbourne, and when he enlisted was in the employ of the Melbourne Harbour Trust. His brother, Driver Joseph McCarron, of the Transit Department, is also at the front, and when he last wrote was in France.
