E. Pitman, well-known as an Essendon harrier, is in Egypt, and now holds the rank of corporal in the 4th Field Artillery.

SERGT. E. S. PITMAN

 

Sergeant E. S. Pitman (Essendon Harriers) has been the recipient of congratulations from the commanding officer of his battalion, for bravery in digging out a wounded comrade under shell fire at Contal Maison early in August.

HARRY McNEIL

 

Harry McNeil writes from France that Sergeant E. S. Pitman (Essendon Harriers) is shortly being transferred to the Flying Corps. McNeil mentions that 'H. Fynmore is to run at sports tomorrow in a mile, but he expects to strike a snag in T. N. Vines.'

LIEUT. E. S. PITMAN  

 

A middle distance track member of the Essendon Harriers (writes Mr A. S. Howcroft), in E. S. Pitman, has been promoted to a Lieutenancy, and is now attached to a Flying Corps. This information was communicated to his family by cable last Monday. Till quite recently Pitman was a sergeant in the infantry, and it was only a few weeks ago that he was complimented by Major-General Cox for bravery in digging -out, under fire, a wounded comrade, who had been buried by shell fire.

Mr. and, Mrs. H. W. Pitman, of Eglinton street, Moonee Ponds, have been notified by cable that their son, Ernest, has been granted a commission in the Royal Flying Corps. Lieut. Pitman left as a private in Col. Grimwade's brigade, and has had about nine months' fighting with the artillery in France.

2nd Lieut. Ernest Pitman, of the  Essendon Harriers, was at the middle of July located at a Flying School at Grantham, in England. He was at latest advices flying a single-seater scouting machine, and had almost entirely recovered from a smash experienced a few weeks previously.

The index card indicates that Pitman served with the 4th Field Artillery Brigade as a Bombadier, Corporal and Brigade Sergeant Major; Royal Flying Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant, and the Royal Air Force as a Lieutenant.  His address was recorded as 101 Eglinton St, Moonee Ponds, Victoria, Australia.
