About 50 members and friends of St. Thomas' harriers assembled at Mr. Barker's residence, Waratah street, Ascot Vale, on Saturday evening, to say au revoir to Mr. Cecil Secombe, who is leaving for the front. Mr. T. Cook, vice-president, in making the presentation, eulogised the good qualities of the guest for the work he had done for the club since its inception. In responding, the recipient thanked the members for their kindness to him, and expressed the hope that he would be able to give a good account of him self. During the evening, two of our returned wounded boys, Ellis Stones and Ernie Morse, attended, and were accorded a warm welcome and good wishes for their speedy recovery. Musical items and recitations were rendered by several of the members and friends, and altogether a very enjoyable evening was spent, everybody feeling they were greatly indebted to Mr. and Mrs. Barker for allowing the function to take place at their home, and also for supplying refreshments. The company, before leaving, sang Auld Lang Syne, giving three hearty cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Barker and family.

PRIVATE C. S. SECCOMBE

C. S. Seccombe, of the same club [St Thomas' Harriers], writes from France, having just completed his first month of fighting on the western front. He is located with a Pioneer Battalion. Seccombe writes: "Pat Dooley is not far from where I write, but I have not had a chance to look him up yet. E. A. Neate is in the same battalion as I am."

1941 Private Cecil Stanley Seccombe

On the morning of the 6th September 1918, to the South West of TINCOURT, No 1941 Pte Cecil Stanley SECCOMBE'S Platoon was held up by enemy Machine Guns and rifle fire. Quickly grasping the situation, Private SECCOMBE moved the Lewis Gun of which he was in charge to a flank, from which he could obtain observation of the enemy, although at the time, himself under heavy Machine Gun fire.  By this means, he was able to continually harrass the enemy by his Lewis Gun fire, thus enabling the Platoon to be pushed forward, and eventually, on the enemy's retreat, which was mainly due to his action, was able to inflict severe casualties on them.

Through his action, Private SECCOMBE was also the means of preventing two attempts by the enemy to blow up a bridge across the stream to the south of TINCOURT.

By his coolness and dash, he did much to enable the advance to be promptly carried out, and his bearing throughout was a fine example to the remainder of the men.
