A happy evening was spent in the Newmarket Baptist School Hall on 13th May, when a farewell social was tendered two young men who have grown up in the church, and are now leaving to fight for King and Country. Gunner F. Whitcroft and Sapper V. Lynch. The chair was occupied by the Pastor, Captain Chaplain Potter, and musical and elocutionary items were rendered. During the evening, presentations of a wristlet watch to Gunner Whitcroft and a safety razor to Sapper V. Lynch were made, as small tokens of the love and esteem in which they are both held. Advantage was taken of the opportunity to present the organist, Mr. A. Downie, with a cheque in recognition of the valuable services he has rendered the church. Mr. Downie has acted in an honorary capacity as church organist for the past 19 years.

[Sid] Potter had been pastor of Newmarket twice, the first time being from 1912 until he went into the war as a chaplain, and again in 1927-1828.
