AU REVOIR.

SOLDIERS FAREWELLED.

Messrs. M. G. Muir and W. Mason, who have relinquished positions in R. Ovens Pty. Ltd. in order to join the colours, were on Tuesday evening, tendered a very hearty send-off by their fellow employees, the departing soldiers also being made recipients of presentations as marks of esteem. The farewell took the form of a smoke night held in the large bread-room attached to the bakery, which comfortably seated, carpeted, and draped with flags of the Allies, was crowded with friends and well-wishers of Messrs Muir and Mason. Mr. J. McJunkin presided, and the proceedings were most enjoyable, an excellent programme being contributed to by leading artists. Incidental to the toast of "The King," Mr. Gerald Massey appropriately recited "Hats Off," and the toast of the evening -that of "Our Guests"--was entrusted to Cr. W. J. Mountain, who said that, what ever might be said to the contrary, we had not done enough for our boys at the front. They were kept in the trenches for unconscionable periods, and he wished Messrs. Muir and Mason good luck in their endeavour to give them a spell. He also expressed a hope that they would have an opportunity of shaking hands with the King and receiving Victoria Crosses. Mr. R. Ovens, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Muir with a pair of spurs and whip, and Mr. Mason with a shaving out fit. Silver pencils were added by the lady members of the staff. Cr. A. F. Showers having wished the soldiers good fortune and a safe return to Australia, the recipients, who were loudly cheered, thanked their fellow employees for the compliments extended, and expressed a hope that they would be enabled to show they were worthy of the good wishes expressed. Other toasts honoured were "Our Soldiers at the Front," proposed by Mr. S. Downton and responded to by Mr. M. G. Muir, and "The Firm of R. Ovens Proprietary," proposed by Mr. Fricke and replied to by Mr. Ovens. Mr. A. Morrison was an excellent accompanist, and the following contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable programme:-Messrs. C. Connor, Hannah, W Griffiths, R. Vernon, J. J. Connor, Gerald Massey, Wells, Bass, and Master Meagher.
