Word has been received of the d[eath on] 30th April, from wounds received [in France] of Signaller Leslie A. Mateer, eldest [son of] Mr. and Mrs. W. Mateer, 19 Gibdon [street], Burnley, late of Ascot Vale. Prior [to] enlisting he was employed in the telegraph branch of the Victorian Railways. He [was] 19 years, and had been one year and ... months on active service.

He was in the signalling section, D coy and lived in a suburb of Melbourne.  He was away sick, in hospital near Albert when he picked up a bomb in the hospital grounds and was examining it with three or four others when it exploded.  He died that same day from his injuries.  We received news of his death the following day.  He used to be in my Lewis gun section he was only a lad and had been employed in the Government Railway Dept before Joining up.
