THE S.S. "BALL[ARAT]"

 

The following letter, with .... the sinking of the Australian .... Ballarat taken from a ..... written by Private A. G [Page, Ngar-]veno street, Moonee Ponds   England. Private Page ..... this district in connection [with] cricket and football teams.

 

"I have safely arrived in .... have to thank God I am ..... had rather an eventful trip... up, ere we reached land, by .... sent to the bottom. Our ship .... any rate, and we were brought ..... [des]stroyers. What a difference! ... travelling at about nine knots ... days and days, but the destroyer.. us in at 27 knots, and it was ... I assure you I know there .... now, as never before, and .... experience is not one looked .... big event in one's life, and ... will be long remembered by [all] the boys aboard. I had a l[etter] (not quite finished) to you, ... you will find the latter half [I ex-]pect a fish has read the other now. I was writing away a.... heard a scamper up on deck and ..   a boat parade I commenced ... any papers and your letter, wh[ich...] up they went in the air, and ..... The remaining portion of ... thought might have some p....   est. That is why I send it."  

 

The London "Times" mentions [Lieut] E. J. Kernan* was about to step ... the last boats to leave the .... noticed a private beside him. [He ] said: "I'll find another place, ... else." Lieut. Kernan, who is [the son of] Mr. John Kernan, of "Merai", ...was afterwards taken off the .... a destroyer.

Sig. A. Page, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ch... Page, of Ngarveno street, Moonee Ponds, has been admitted to the Lord Derby War Hospital, Warrington, England, suffering from a gunshot wound in the right thigh. He is the husband of Mrs. Arthur Page Jun., of Malvern, and was attached to the [8th] Battalion, sailing on the troopship "Ballarat," on 19th February, 1917.
