Mr. and Mrs. James Pratt, "Deeside," Bloomfield road, Ascot Vale, have received news that their son, Sgt. Arch. J. Pratt, has been granted a commission in the Royal Flying Corps. Lieut. Pratt enlisted in August, 1914, as a sapper in the Field Engineers, and sailed with the first division on 22nd October, having thus been on active service for 1000 days last Monday.

He took part in the landing at Gallipoli, and was engaged in building the first piers and roads under heavy Turkish fire, losing the majority of his comrades in the first few weeks of that famous episode. After being injured by a shell explosion at Lone Pine in August he was in hospital in Malta for six weeks. He returned to the Peninsula, and remained till the evacuation. After a term in Egypt and in the sands of Arabia, the next move was to France, where he took part in the Somme battles, receiving a shrapnel wound at Pozieres, which necessitated a few weeks' sojourn in a French hospital.

In the latter part of last year there was a call for volunteers for the air service and Sgt. Pratt was accepted. Since December he has been training in the schools and aerodromes in England and Scot land, and qualified as pilot in May. At latest advices he expected to go to France immediately.

ESSENDON MEMBER'S FEAT

The Essendon Club is greatly pleased over news which has been received of one of its members, Lieut. A. J. Pratt, who recently won his commission in the Flying Corps. Lieut. Pratt has soon commenced to make a name for himself among the flying men by bringing down an enemy machine in a fight over the German lines. Rowing men generally will he glad to learn of his success, and hope that he will go safely through with his dangerous but exciting duties.
