ESSENDON HARRIER ENLISTS

AND HAS NOW HIS COMMISSION

Lieut Alfred J. May, who enlisted as a private in the AIF, and has since secured his commission, enlisted in April, 1915. He was well known in amateur athletic circles, and was for many years a prominent member of the Essendon Harriers, and a member of the "A" team of that club when they scored so many victories in cross-country championships. He was hon. secretary of the club, season 1914, and was also a member of the Council of the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association and Royal Life-Saving Society.  Besides athletics he took a keen interest and a prominent part in all public affairs in the City of Essendon. He held the position of hon. secretary of the Essendon River League, and was hon. secretary of "Henley on Maribyrnong," 1914. He was a member of the Council of the Essendon Citizen's Military Association, and was selected for the position of hon. Secretary of the Military Fete held at Queen's Park, Moonee Ponds, on March 28, 1914. This fete was a great success in spite of adverse weather, the net profit being about £500. This sum was utilised for the purchase of band instruments, colors, etc., for the 58th Infantry (Essendon Rifles). In December, 1914, he was appointed at a public meeting, held for the purpose of starting a Red Cross branch, honorary secretary, and through his efforts the branch made great strides, and raised £1200, with which, they purchased two fine Napier motor ambulances, and also sent to Government House fifteen thousand articles. The branch, in recognition of his services presented him with a purse of sovereigns and a handsome illuminated address. He is now serving in France with the Brigade. Lieut. May is a son of Mr. Frank May, of 'The Argus' office, and a nephew of Mr. Walter R. May, of this office.

LIEUT. A. J. MAY

In a letter from France, dated 8/8/1917, Lieutenant A. J. May, of the Essendon Club, writes as follows:— "I  often see a number of the lads who once chased the paper across country,  and the whole lot of them look well above running weight, but most assure  me that with a few weeks' training they would be fit to tackle a 10 min C.C.C.  A few weeks ago our brigade had a cross-country race of about four miles. I did not compete, being now on 14 stone, but looked on and started the field, which numbered 14.  J. W.   Cowan, the old East Melbourne distance man, won easily in 25 minutes, and could have done a lot better if he had been pushed. He looked in the pink of condition, but has filled out a lot. While on leave for a few hours in one of the large French towns I met W. H. Dickinson, of Hawthorn.  He was looking well, and informed me that his brother Arthur is still going strong; also recently met Crichton of the Essendon Club. He was on a sniping range at the time, and is now a sergeant. Have met dozens of other members of the V.A.A.A., and we always have a chat over old times. Was much grieved to hear of the death of Harry Beeson; what a great skipper I he was." . . . . Since the date of the  above letter word has been received that Lieutenant May has been severely wounded in the ankle, and is in hospital in France.

LIEUTENANT MAY EXPECTED.

Lieut. A. J. May, ex-secretary of the Essendon Harriers, is due back in Melbourne shortly. May was severely wounded in the foot some months back. He has been mentioned in despatches by General Birdwood for work done in France. Lieut. May's return from service is counterbalanced by the enlistment of an uncle who went into camp some weeks back.

MUNICIPAL TAXATION.

Following receipt of letter from the Lord Mayor appealing for help for the Australian Comforts Fund Cr. J. Goldsworthy thought that the Federal Parliament should impose equitable taxation to help patriotic funds. The system of begging for money and raffling was most undesirable. Lt. A. J. May, Mr. Price. Cr. W J. Mountain, also Mr. D. Johnson and Mrs. Leffler from the North Essendon centre endorsed these remarks and spoke against the gambling spirit that was being fostered. It was decided to send the letter to the Essendon Council for consideration, the meeting being in favour of municipal taxation. Lt. A. J. May, who has recently returned from the front, was heartily welcomed by Mayor Mountain and Cr. J. Goldsworthy. Lt. May who had previously been Hon. secretary to the Society before his enlistment, related some of his experiences. He was now discharged, but hoped to be back in France it a few months' time, serving in either the British or American army, where he would be able to retain his commission.
