RECOMMENDATION FOR MILITARY CROSS 57th Infantry Battalion AIF. Lieutenant Robert MUTER
East of MESSINES on night 11/12th March 1918 Lieut MUTER showed splendid courage and initiative in the face of the enemy in a raid carried out by this Battalion he was OC of the left assault party. On reaching the enemy wire it was found to be uncut and while LIEUT MUTER'S party were trying to make an entry they were heavily bombed from the enemy trench. As our return bombing did not silence this LIEUT MUTER vaulted the wire alone and jumped into the enemy trench with his revolver keeping down the bombing till his party had effected an entrance to the trench. LIEUT MUTER'S act showed the greatest courage as he not only took the chance of enemy action but from our own bombs coming into the trench as well. He saved this flank and probably the whole raid from failure.

Extract from Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing Enquiries Bureau Correspondence
Died of Wounds 25-4-18
Re Lieut Muter, Robert, MC. On the night of 25th April during a counter bombardment in the vicinity of Villers Bretonneux the above officer, my friend, was severely wounded, while his Company Commander, Capt Morgan was killed outright by the same shell. The best medical attention was given Muter, but in spite of all that was done for him, he died a few hours afterwards, while being conveyed from the Aid Post to the Clearing Station. It may also interest the enquirers to know that although poor old Muter was so severely wounded that he did not suffer a great deal of pain and that he was conscious and cheery until the end. He is buried in the Military Cemetery at Daours and his comrades have erected a very nice cross as a token of their esteem to mark his resting place. Two of his brother officers, same Regiment, Lieuts Kerr and Falconer rest on either side.
