4244 Private Sydney Ernest Martin 1st Pioneer Battalion
K Sept 12/18
He was the first man killed on the morning of 23rd August after the hop off at St Martin's Wood at about 4.30 am.  A piece of shell hit him in the mouth & came out of the back of his head.  He must have died instantly.  I was a little in front of him & did not actually see him hit, but next day I helped to bury him where he fell.  Our padre Capt Moorhouse conducted the service.  A rough cross was erected and about a fortnight later a Bn Cross was taken out & put up.
