Gunner J W McLean of the 2 Light Trench Mortar Battery, was returned to Australia medically unfit and discharged on 11 October, 1918, exactly one month before the Armistice. He was suffering from was what termed "effort syndrome", more properly an anxiety disorder, with symptoms similar to heart disease. He died six weeks after his discharge.
Death of Anzac.
John W. McLean, 31 years of age, of 39 Maribyrnong road, Ascot Vale, collapsed and died while working as fireman at the North Melbourne Electric Supply Company's Works last Monday. Deceased, who was an Anzac with 1100 days' service to his credit, returned from the front five weeks ago, after serving with the 22nd F.A.B., and started work on the morning of his death. A post-mortem examination held on Tuesday showed that death was due to acute dilation of the heart as a result of being gassed at the front. No inquest will be held.
