Williamson first enlisted in 1915. He spent a good deal of time ill and in hospital in 1915, and on being discharged in November 1915, he told his family he had been discharged from the Army, and left the state. According to an enquiry conducted by the Military Police, this was because he was not getting on with his wife. In New South Wales he enlisted under the alias Alexander Walter Gray, giving his aunt's home in Petersham as his address.
Pte Williamson's wife Daisy remarried in 1921, at the time a widow with two small children, to Leo Michael McCormack, a returned serviceman who had served in the 36th Heavy Artillery Group, having been a soldier in the RAGA before the war.

Private Alfred Walter Elmore Williamson (Walter),
dearly loved husband of Daisy Williamson, 26 Grandison

Gone-What a world of meaning in that one word.
In our dreams we see your dear face,
And kiss your gentle brow,
And in our little hearts we know
We have no daddy now.
WILLIAMSON.-Killed in action in France, 23rd August,

dearly loved eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Williamson,
9 Lawson st., Moonee Ponds, loving brother of Victor,
Ernie, Harold, Myrtle, Alma, Eunice, having just returned

Could I, his mother, have clasped his hand
The son we loved so well;
To kiss his brow when death was near,
And whisper, "Dear Walter, farewell."
