MELBOURNE JOCKEY IN FRANCE

One of the popular Melbourne cross country horsemen, in Fred W. M'Cabe, is now serving in France with the Australian Imperial Forces. In a chatty letter from the front, M'Cabe states that he has been in some hot places, but at time of writing was well back from the line. He had been sent to Calais for horses, and spent his birthday while on the road bringing them down to the firing line. M'Cabe was up at the Ypres front, and states that it is shameful the way the town has been demolished. At Calais he met Mr R. V. M'Guinness, the well known amateur cross-country jockey, who looks wonderfully well; and Bert Price, who won the Grand National Steeplechase on Flash Jack. Price is well and cheerful, and has put on a lot of weight. M'Cabe applied to the Societe des Steeplechases de France for a riding licence, and the secretary replied requesting his birth certificate, photograph, and a letter showing the permission of the Commander in Chief. M'Cabe intends riding in England when on furlough in January. F. W. M'Cabe won many races over the jumps both in New Zealand and Australia. He was successful on Bullawarra in the Australian Steeplechase and many other races. On Troublesome he won the Adelaide Grand National Steeplechase, and on Peary he was successful in the Great Northern Steeplechase at Auckland. M'Cabe also earned much success as a trainer, and several good winners were prepared at his training stables at Flemington. These are known as 'Acer,' after one of M'Cabe's best and most successful mounts.
