Portrait of 6573 Private (Pte) Phillip Stanley Phelan, 14th Battalion.
A clerk from Flemington, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Phelan embarked
with the 21st Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on
2 October 1916. Later promoted to Sergeant he was reported as
missing in action. It was later confirmed the he had been captured and
was a prisoner of war in Germany. Following the Armistice he was
repatriated to England and returned to Australia on 1 December 1918.
