MILITARY MEDAL WON
For distinguished conduct in the
field, Private Gerald L. Monaghan,
brother of Mr D. C. Monaghan, of Mel-
bourne, has been awarded the Military
Medal. On joining the Australian
Imperial Forces, Private Monaghan
was attached to the band at Broad-
meadows, having previously had ex-
perience as a member of St. Augus-
tine's Orphanage Band, Geelong. Sub-
sequently he became a stretcher-
bearer with the 22nd Battalion.

Private G. L. Monaghan, formerly of
Melbourne and Ballarat, who has been
serving as a stretcher bearer in France,
was presented with the military medal
by Lieutenant-General Sir William
Birdwood on September 3. A cable
message dated September 12, has
reached Melbourne friends from Private
Monaghan, conveying the news that he
had been awarded the decoration
named.
