AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES AT SALISBURY PLAIN
Mr H. J. Moody, of 3 Thompson street, Essendon, encloses a group photograph, reproduced below, which he received from his brother. It represents some of the men who took part in a 7½ miles road race at Salisbury Plain to decide the championship of the 3rd Division. The performances of some of the men are stated under the illustration. Corporal Moody, who is in the Artillery, ran in the race, and finished 12th in about 70 competitors.
In his letter, Corporal Moody states that the two men on the left-hand side of the top row are unknown to him. Nearly all the boys in the group are in France.
Bottom Row (left to right). — E. Neate, winner of five miles Victorian championship, and holder, of five mile record of Australia; Sergt. Hewitt, winner of Broadmeadows to Melbourne race, Christmas, 1915, winner of 7½ mile road race, Salisbury Plain; Malcolm, is described as a good runner, but of his performances Corporal Moody knows nothing.
Top Row (from right to left). — Charles Willis, 8th in the Frankston to Melbourne race, 8th in the 7½ mile race at Salisbury plain, fifth in the Broadmeadows to Melbourne race— a consistent performer: Taylor, 2nd in the 7½ mile race; Waasnop, 3rd in the 7½ mile race, runner-up for Victorian mile championship, 3rd in the Broadmeadows to Melbourne race.

Recommendation for Belgian Croix de Guerre
Date of recommendation October 5th 1918
16th Battery 6th Army Brigade, AFA
Corporal Thomas Cuthbert Moody
This man has been a Telephonist and Linesman for two years, during the advance since 8th August 1918 he has been in charge of the Battery communications and on many occasions both by day and by night maintained communications successfully under heavy shell fire. He has had several narrow escapes from death but has in every instance persevered with his task until it was completed. It has been noticed that when work is of a particularly dangerous kind this NCO himself undertakes it rather than allow any of those under him to undergo special risks. In particular he did exceptionally good work at ROSIERES on 20th August when he kept communication with his Headquarters through heavy shell fire and on 18th and 19th September near Le VERGUIER when he maintained communications from his Battery forward to PO and to the Brigade Headquarters under very difficult conditions and heavy fire. His conduct at all times has been exceptionally gallant and his leading and example to the Signallers of his Unit beyond praise.
