The Thirty-ninth : the history of the 39th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, by A.T. Paterson.
Pte J Sheehan assisted with information for the 39th Battalion book - see page xxvi.
"Meanwhile stretcher-bearers and carrying-parties were very busy. Without the satisfaction of hitting back, it was their duty to go overland, in full view of the enemy, right up to the forward line. Working in pairs, and carrying wounded, they could not rush for safety when they heard a shell or machine gun bullets travelling towards them....
Private John Sheehan, himself wounded, assisted in bringing
others back until he collapsed in a state of utter exhaustion".

Military Medal
Date of recommendation: 4 Oct 1917
On 4th October 1917, East of YPRES, he displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action. This man acted as a stretcher bearer and worked continuously through the Operation until utterly exhausted from fatigue and wounds. The conditions under which he worked were exceedingly trying owing to exceptionally heavy shell fire and deep mud. He was of great value to the RMO in organising squads for carrying and his example was an inspiration to all stretcher bearers.
Signed by Brigadier-General Ramsay McNicholl.
