SEAMAN ENVIES SOLDIER AND FINALLY JOINS ARMY
Leslie G. Peek, 21, a seaman, of 36 Lock street, Essendon, who enlisted at
the Town Hall Recruiting Depot yesterday, claims to have served on the
first of the transports to cross the sea with the first section of the Australian
Expeditionary Force. Being enamoured of the life of the Australian soldier as
far as he saw it on ship board and in Egypt, Peek determined to enlist when
his vessel came back to Melbourne.
To his chagrin, however, his parents refused their consent because he was
only 18 years of age. He, therefore, shipped again for overseas and was
engaged on transporting Imperial troops to Salonika. Knowing he would be
free when 21, he returned to Australia recently, and joined the colors yesterday.
