Penrose joined his unit on Gallipoli on 15 May 1915, and remained there until evacuated sick on 10 Aug 1915.   After being hospitalised in Alexandria, Cairo and Port Said, he was returned to Australian per the Kanowna with enteric fever.  Rembarking in July 1916, Penrose returned to the Middle East.  He was taken on strength of the 2 Light Horse Regiment and subsequently was transferred to the Machine Gun Section of the 2 LHR and served there for the rest of the war, achieving the rank of Temporary Sergeant.
