5655-L-Cpl. J. Peoples, 22nd Batt., sailed for England, via the Cape, on 25th Sept., 1916. During leave he visited Leith, and then went to France on 11th December. He spent Christmas at Ginchy, on the Somme, and had been under fire before that time. On Boxing Day each three men received two boxes from the Australian Comforts Fund, which were highly appreciated.
He saw many battle-fields, including Bullecourt (where on May 3, the Batt. was reduced from 600 to 137), Polygon Wood, Passchendalle, etc. About April 6th he was sent to Albert, on the Somme. Up to this time he had gone scathless, except being buried by a trench mortar shell at Warneton, but on 15th April he was wounded in the head, thigh and leg. That meant "Blighty" and he was there in various hospitals. After recovery he was passed for home service, and served until the Armistice was signed. He is now again with us, and has passed into civilian life, in which we wish him all success after his campaigning days in the gallant 22nd.
