Pugh received a gunshot wound to the back and was returned to Australia and discharged on medical grounds  In 1918 he re-enlisted with the medical corps.  He was assigned to the 1st Australian Convalescent Depot.  He returned home on the Ormonde in June 1919 and was discharged in Melbourne on 1 August 1919.
