The soldier in the back row marked with an X was George Paton Wilson, who enlisted at the age of 18 years and 6 months in January 1917. George would be liable for compulsory service in the January of the year in which he turned 18 - 1916 - so the the photo would have been taken in 1916.  The officers in the centre of the photo are wearing 58 Inf Regiment hat badges, and other have the collar badges.    If you think you might be able to identify anyone from this photo, email me for a higher resolution copy. MILITARY MATTERS ESSENDON RIFLES.

ADMISSION OF SENIOR CADETS.

A parade was held at Queen's Park, Moonee Ponds, on Saturday afternoon. Lieutenant-Colonel H. E. Elliott being in command. The occasion was the formal admission of the 1896 quota of senior cadets into the battalion, also the distribution of the musketry prizes and examination certificates. The 1896 quota of senior cadets, under Area Officers Captain R. W. Wells and Lieutenant H. Chapman, were received by a guard of honour of the "Essendon Rifles." under Second Lieutenant H. D. Preston, drawn up as an "Old Guard." Upon the "New Guard" taking up its position on the ground vacated by the "Old Guard," the incoming cadets were formally handed over by Captain Wells and Lieutenant Chapman to Lt. Col H. E. Elliott, who addressed them and afterwards dismissed them to join their companies.

The battalion were next drawn up in line and saluted Major J. M. Carroll, Staff Officer, representing Colonel R. Wallace, Commandant of Victoria, who inspected it. Three sides of a square were then formed, and the Mayor of Essendon (accompanied by the Mayoress) presented the musketry prizes and examination certificates to those of the battalion who had won them during the year. In doing so, Cr. Henderson said he was pleased to make the presentations, and he hoped the battalion would be the best round Melbourne. He next congratulated them on their splendid military appearance and also commended the boys of the "New Guard." He mentioned the fact that a citizens' committee had been formed, so as to help the lads and also alluded to the recent Military Fete, at which a large sum had been raised to equip the drill hall. The new drill hall was now being built, and he was glad to know that it was to have a wooden floor.  Major Carroll next addressed the lads, and made some complimentary remarks, as well as giving them some sound advice. Line was then re-formed and the ceremony concluded-with a march past column, and advanced in line, all the manoeuvres being well carried out. A pleasant afternoon was brought to a close with afternoon tea in a marquee, the catering arrangements being well looked after by Mr. R. Ovens.
