Flemington-Kensington Church News, December 1919

Spr. Walter Sandbach, Aust. Corps Signaling Coy., embarked on the " Nestor" for England on 28th February, 1918, sailing via the Panama Canal route. There was much of interest to see during the voyage. The Canal itself, with its electrically worked locks for raising and lowering the ships which pass through, is a wonder well worth going to see. On this work of subjugation of nature to man‘s use an army of 39,000 men were employed.

Walter landed at Liverpool on April 21st, and went into training at Bedford Signal Depot as instrument repairer. On 3rd October he crossed the Channel to France, and became a motor-cyclist despatch rider with the Australian Corps Sig. Coy. He saw nearly all the large Belgium towns, which, contrary to expectations, were very little damaged. He had the good fortune to see Aachen and Cologne, in Germany, and along the Rhine, through Bonn to Coblenz. On holiday he went to many places, and among them to Edinburgh and Glasgow, and among the friends he called on was the minister's mother. He was very much impressed with the beauties of  Edinburgh, and received everywhere quite a Scotch welcome.

He returned per  the " Suevic " via the Cape, calling at Freemantle, and arriving in Melbourne on 10th September.
