HMAT Anchises. After further training in Egypt and England,
he joined the 29th Battalion on the Western Front on 28 Sep
1916. While detached to the 25th Machine Gun Company, he
was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium on 26 Sep

He came over with me on the 5th Reinf. At Polygon Wood on the right of the race-course, he went over in front of me in the next Coy. I passed over him, he was quite dead but I did not see how he was hit. It was in the early morning, daylight. We had a heavy barrage to go through. We got our obj. All the bodies were buried by the 30th Batt. It was the morning of the 26th.
He was well-educated, College education, young, about 10-11 stone. He was A Co.

Pte E C Cater 29th Battn Hqts, S/B, who is now in France, was with them when they were hit by the same shell while on a fatigue party with the Engrs, near Polygon Wood, and I understand from Carter that they were both killed. Graham came from Newmarket, Melbourne, and was a small, fair man of about 20, we called him Rex.....
