Flemington-Kensington Church News, July 1919

Capt. Reg Stanhope, Aust. Army Vet. Corps was employed for several months in Adelaide and Sydney in connection with his duty, and finally left Melbourne on 19th Sept., 1916. After landing in Egypt, he was was quarantined for a month, after which he took ship for Marseilles. The vessel was mined in the  Mediterranean sea, a great hole being blown in its side, and as a consequence they were five days in Crete. On landing at Marseilles he crossed France by rail and over the Channel to England, After a short period there he was sent to the Vet. Hospital at Calais, at which place he remained for a considerable period. We have all heard of the devotion of the best skill to the sick and wounded horses, and of the wonderful cures effected, which saved thousands of them.

After a time he moved up to the fighting lines in pursuit of his duties. In a recent letter he mentions an incident of the change of the fortune of war in occupying the late H.Q. of the German Staff at Avesnes, 50 miles SE. of Lille. The German High Command is now dispersed in all directions. Capt. Stanhope in his latest letter writes from near Charleroi, and mentions the extreme kindness of the people there. He had applied for a six months’ course in the Royal Vet. College in London, and his application has been accepted, so he will possibly not be home for some time.
