Lieutenant Douglas Buzolich, under date of November 28, writes from Zeitoun, where he is completing his training. He advises having found himself attached to the same company as Hugh Boyd, the well-known Melbourne University-Bendigo athlete; also F. H. Wickham, who is attached to the Pay Corps. Peculiarly enough, both Wickham and Boyd have been State quarter-mile hurdles champion, Wickham in 1914, and Boyd back in 1907.

Capt Fred H Wickham joined the 1st Army Pay Corps and sailed with the first Expeditionary Force. He went away as Sergt, then gained the rank of Lieut. and afterwards became Captain. He was a long time in Egypt, then on the West front in France, and is now at the Administrative HQ, London, E. Like nearly all our men, though impressed by what he has seen, Fred is convinced that there is no country like Australia. His long letters are always packed with interesting things. In his last letter from France he says - "since my last letter the Boche put a lively 5.9 H E into my orchard (where he was billeted) and dug a small hole 17 yards in circumference, and over 2 yards deep - that will give you some idea of the ginger in the HE shell. Our boys brought off their objective, capturing two lines of trenches in gallant style. Fritz got so mad that the last two nights we were in the front he put about 400 shells into our little village, shrapnel, H E, with gas shells as a savoury, but beyond blotting out an Imperial D H Q artillery staff his 'strafe' went unrewarded".
