Flemington-Kensington Church News, June 1918
3496—Pte. E. M. Salter, 47th Battalion, has just returned invalided, from England. The old boys of the SS will remember Ernie, a good many years ago, in Miss Draffin‘s (now Mrs. O. Rankin) class. While still quite young he settled on the land in Queensland; in the midst of a busy settler's life he heard his country‘s call, and volunteered for service.
On 22nd Jan. 1917, he sailed from Sydney for England. On arrival there he went into camp at Codford on the Plains, and left for France on the 1st August, 1917. He was in the firing line at Ypres in about a fortnight. He went "over the top" on 12th October, and in holding on was severely wounded in the leg on the 14th of the month. He was taken to the American Hospital just outside Calais, and then to the Canadian Ontario Military Hospital, then to the Hospital at Orphington, Kent, and then to Dartford and last of all to Weymouth.
He speaks highly of the Hospital treatment. He sailed from England on 10th March, and arrived here a short time back. The voyage did him good, and he is making splendid progress. Old friends should see Ernie soon as he has to go back to Queensland. We wish him future success and Godspeed.
