Flemington-Kensington Church News, March 1920
61703 - Cpl Allan Waldon, A.A.O.C., sailed from Melbourne, per the "Barambah" on 31/8/18. Twenty days out from Fremantle, Durban was reached, and the troops marched two miles into the city, The soldiers were excellently received and had trips all round the city. No leave was given at Cape Town and Table Mountain had to be looked at wistfully from a distance. After leaving the Cape, Allan had an attack of influenza, which was so deadly on the ship. They arrived at Sierra Leone on 20th October, but were not permitted to land. While the ship was in port one of the tremendous thunderstorms broke out, which are much spoken of on this coast Plenty of fruit was brought to the ship's side for sale.
The "Barambah" left Sierra Leone in a convoy of 8 vessels. On 5th November. Madeira was sighted with its diversified little patches of cultivated land. ln the midst of it all Allan found time to think of the Sunday School Picnic at Mentone. On the 13th they first caught sight of the white cliffs of Dover.
He parted with Stewart Dunn and Eddie Clark, at Salisbury Station, they going to Hurdcott and Allan to Copford, at which camp he remained for ten months. He had holiday leave three times and went to the lsle of Wight and visited relatives at Edinburgh and Tarbert. He was greatly taken with the old grey city by the North Sea, and also with the historical scenes at Stirling. He arrived home a few weeks ago per the " Komgen Luise," (sic) via the Suez Canal, and we bid him hearty welcome.
